Ornamental tree to be cultivated as singular tree or in hedges and along riversides. The fruit is eaten raw or in marmalade. It has astringent, antidiarrheal and antibleedings properties. Planted in parks and avenues. Horsewhips, whips and paddles are produced from its wood. Fast growing.

They are generally medium-sized trees, reaching 10-25 m tal. The leaves are alternate, ovate-acuminate, and evenly serrated margins. Small monoecious flowers appear in early spring while the leaves are still developing. Male flowers are longer and fuzzy. Female flowers are greenish and more rounded. The fruit is a small drupe.Native to the Mediterranean and warmer parts of Europe.

Prefers cool and light soils under temperate climates.

Cold stratification for 4 months previous to sowing in spring.
