Very decorative ornamental tree with edible fruits and medicinal properties. Its wood is of great value for forges, as firewood and to make coal. This species is grown in parks and gardens for the beauty of its foliage, its flowers and fruits. It can also be found as an isolated tree or to build green walls.
Times ago herbal tea was made out from the leaves for its diuretic and antiseptic properties. It was also an ingredient in alcoholic beverages. The bark and leaves have anti-inflamatory and diuretic properties. Its fruit is also used to make preserves and jam. This tree is the symbol of the city of Madrid, Spain.
The Strawberry Tree grows to 5–10 metres tall. The serrated leaves are bright green and similar to the Bay Laurel. Its flowers are white. They produce an orange-yellow berry which turns red when ripe.
