The Acer saccharinum, or sugar maple, will delight us with its striking autumn colours: deep yellow, orange and red.
Perfect for planting along paths or in groups. Its soft wood is widely used in carpentry. Its sap yields ‘maple syrup’, which is effective in diets, rich in minerals and detoxifying, and has a delicious flavour.
A deciduous tree growing up to 25m tall, with dark green, palmate and lobed leaves that turn in autumn to the colours typical of the season. Small, pendulous, yellowish-green flowers.
It requires loamy, light and fertile soil.
Sowing should be carried out depending on the geographical area, from April to June. Prior to sowing, the seeds may be cold-stratified at 4°C for 2–4 months. You may use potting compost in pots or garden soil mixed with potting compost if sowing directly in the garden. The compost must be kept moist but not waterlogged until the seeds have germinated.
