Ornamental shrub ideal for hedges, clumps and pots. Medicinal.
The fruit when dry was used as an insect-repellent. The wood has a great value for cabinet making. Turned into coal it is very useful in drawings. It has medicinal properties against hepatic and biliary illnesses. Not recommended for domestic use.
Deciduous growing up to 6m with spear-shaped green leaves which become reddish in autumn. Plump and pinky fruit very attractive.
Prefers well-drained, neutral and deep soils.
Depending on the geographical areas and altitude sowing can take place from February to April. To obtain a more regular and faster germination stratify in hot the seeds for 60 days and then stratify in cold for 60-90 days before the sowing. It is possible to use a sowing substrate for potting or soil from the garden together with a sowing substrate if the sowing is made directly into the garden. The substrate must be wet but not soggy until the germination is completed.
