Planting & care

4 months warm stratification followed by a cold stratification of 2-3 months. Alternatively you can do a direct planting outside in autumn keeping the planting wet until spring when it will germinate.

This shrub grows on siliceous, chalky and slightly cool soils.

Its dried leaves have astringent, antiseptic and diuretic properties. They are used to flavor pipe tobacco. Grey or black dye can be made from the different components of its leaves. Marmelade is made with its fruit and tea or herbal tea are made from its leaves. It is a honeybee plant.
