Perennial. Growing up to 3m with flowers in densely crowded spikelets which are spindly and dark brown. Long lanceolate leaves.

Prefers moist and even flooded soils.
It is found on flooded soils on the riversides, ponds and pipes. The leaves are used to produce hand made baskets, chairs and armchairs. The plant is used as a bioremediator.
