SEEDS OF SAPINDUS SAPONARIA - SOAP NUT TREE

A useful tree for firewood, specimen tree, medicinal properties and insect repellent.

Evergreen tree up to 16m  with a wide crown. Green, composed and lanceolate leaves. Little pale-green flowers. Yellow fruit transparent when ripe.

Place the seeds in boiling water at 90ºC for 15 seconds and immediately after transfer to running water with ice cubes in it. Soak for 48h and then proceed to the sowing.

Requieres medium soils with a sunny exposure.

The bark and wood is used in crafts and in carpentry. If you put the pulp of its fruit into water you obtain a foam used as soap to wash clothes or in perfumery. From the seeds oils are extracted for lamps. When they are ground they become a natural insect repellent. The seed are also used to make jewels and toys for children like beads. It is a honeybee species and the bark has perspirant and diuretic properties.
