Fruit tree. Can be grown as a singular or street tree. Fruits contain sugar and starch. They can be eaten fresh or dry. They taste both sweet and slightly acid. This species is used as a graft for other varieties which produce bigger fruits. The wood is used to make music instruments.
Deciduous tree up to 8m. with bright green, oval and pear-shaped leaves. Highly branched and thorny. Small yellow-greenish flower hardly noticeable. The fruit is reddish and whitish inside. It is edible, fleshy and similar in shape to an olive.
Grow on lime, light soils from neutral to acid ones.
Soak the seeds in cool water for 24 hours before sowing at temperatures of 20ºC. Sowing in sand to allow a better drainage.
