A tree cultivated for its edible fruits and ornamental value. Bonsai. The fruit is eaten fresh or in jams, cakes and ice-cream because of its sugary savour. The pulp is astringent. The persimmon contains carbon hydrates, vitamins, iron. The wood is used in cabinet-making.
Deciduous tree up to 10m with deep-green leaves turning to orangey and purple in autumn. Little yellow flowers. A big orangey and edible fruit known as persimmon.
It prefers clay and deep soils.
Depending on the geographical areas and altitude sowing can take place from September to December. To obtain a more regular and faster germination stratify in cold the seeds for 90-120 days before the sowing. It is possible to use a sowing substrate for potting or soil from the garden together with a sowing substrate if the sowing is made directly into the garden. The substrate must be wet but not soggy until the germination is completed.
