This plant is mainly known for its medicinal and culinary purposes. The herbal tea from its root is digestive, and the esssential oil is expectorant, diuretic and has abortive effects among many others. In the Middle Ages they believed this plant could cure the plague. Other herbs are added to its root and leaves to flavor some liqueurs such as gin or absinthe.

Evergreen plant that grows up to 2m with thick and hollowed stems. The stems are violet in the basic to bright-green. Deep green, serrated leaves. The whole plant is really aromatic. It likes deep, moist, rich and well-drained soils. Prefer a temperate-cold climate.

Direct sowing in autumn or depending on the geographical areas and altitude sowing can take place from March to June.To obtain a more regular and faster germination stratify in cold the seeds for 4 months before the sowing. It is possible to use a sowing substrate for potting or soil from the garden together with a sowing substrate if the sowing is made directly into the garden. The substrate must be wet but not soggy until the germination is completed.
