An evergreen plant that grows up to 2m with thick and hollowed stems. The stems are violet in the basic to bright-green. Deep green, serrated leaves. The whole plant is really aromatic.

Direct sowing in autumn or depending on the geographical areas and altitude sowing can take place from March to June.To obtain a more regular and faster germination stratify in cold the seeds for 4 months before the sowing.

The herbal tea from its root is digestive, and the esssential oil is expectorant, diuretic and has abortive effects among many others. In the Middle Ages they believed this plant could cure the plague. Other herbs are added to its root and leaves to flavor some liqueurs such as genever, absinthe.
