Chayote (Sechium edule) is a green, pear-shaped edible fruit belonging to the gourd family, Cucurbitaceae. It is botanically a fruit but is usually prepared and eaten as a vegetable.
Perennial climbing vine, often cultivated as an annual. The edible parts are fruit, young shoots, leaves, roots and seeds, depending on the variety and local culinary traditions.
Chayote is generally low in calories and contains water, dietary fibre, vitamin C, folate and potassium. It can be a useful addition to a balanced diet.
Chayote grows vigorously in warm, frost-free conditions. It needs fertile, well-drained soil, regular moisture, plenty of sunlight and a sturdy trellis or other climbing support. It is commonly propagated by planting the mature fruit, which contains a single large seed.
