This species is mainly used for timber to build pergolas, phone boxes and fishing boats. It is planted in parks, gardens, paths and resists urban contamination very well. The edible flowers are used as herbal tea with calming properties. Honey production. Fodder.
Deciduous tree up to 25m. Thick bark cracked and blackish. Oval and deep-green leaves hanging at night. White, scented clustered flowers densely set, hanging and very attractive. The fruit is a flat brown or cinnamon coloured pod which can be 10cm long.
