PLANTS OF ALGERIAN OAK - QUERCUS CANARIENSIS

This Oak can be cultivated as an isolated tree or to shape hedges. Widely used for reforestation purposes. Its wood is used in construction, to shape beams, as firewood and coal. It is used to produce ink and dye.

Deciduous tree up to 30 metres tall, with a broad crown and dark brown bark. Leaves are alternate, somewhat leathery and deciduous, but also marcescent. The fruit is an acorn.

Endemic species of the Iberian Peninsula and north-western Africa. In Spain, it is distributed throughout western Andalusia, Sierra Morena, some parts of the Montes de Toledo and, in the north, as far as Catalonia.

It adapts very well to all types of soil, although it prefers cool and humid soils.
