Very popular tree, planted for timber and fruit industry. The colour of its leaves is spectacular in autumn. The chestnut is an edible fruit for humans but also for animals. The leaves and bark are cough medicine, astringent and anti-diarrheal. The wood is used in construction, carpentry and cabinet making.
Deciduous tree of 30m tall with dark green leaves turning yellow-reddish in autumn. The little yellowish flowers will give the edible chestnut in autumn.
Prefers cool, siliceous and well drained soils under temperate climates.
Dig a hole at least two or three times as wide and deep as the root ball. Take out the plant from the container and loosen roots to allow them to spread out in all direction. Cut possible broken roots. Mix the soil extracted with a substrate and fill part of the hole with the mixture obtained. Place the plant in the hole and cover with the remaining mixture. Compact the soil around the plant and water thoroughly.
