PLANTS OF BLUE LARGE-LEAVED HYDRANGEA - HYDRANGEA MACROPHYLLA BLUE - T

Hydrangea macrophylla, known as common hydrangea or large-leaved hydrangea, is one of the most popular species due to its large rounded flowers and intense colours. It is used in gardens where it can form shady borders and in pots for cool, damp terraces and patios.

Deciduous shrub with a height of 1 to 2 metres. Flowers from late spring to summer. Flowers in large mophead or lacecap clusters.

Exposure to partial shade, avoiding strong midday sun. Hardy (-10 / -15 °C).

A special feature of the common hydrangea is that its colour depends on the pH of the soil: for blue flowers, it requires acidic soil with aluminium. For pink flowers, it requires neutral or alkaline soil. White varieties do not change colour.

It needs rich, cool, well-drained soil. Water abundantly and regularly, especially in summer. Prune lightly as it flowers on the previous year's wood (if pruned heavily, it may not flower). In cold climates, protect flower buds during winter.
