The Pitanga is a very decorative shrub or tree in a garden because of its colourful foliage and its fruits, which can be eaten fresh or canned. They are used in salads, juices, ice cream, jellies and jams. Bonsai.
Shrub to tree up to 5m. tall, with dark, smooth bark that flakes off. Bright copper-red to bright green evergreen leaves. White flowers in spring. Fruit, red-black when ripe.
Protect from cold. Abundant watering in summer, moderate in winter.
