A compact, deciduous shrub prized for its intense blue flowers in late summer to early autumn, when few other shrubs are in bloom.
Pollinator-friendly 🐝 (excellent for bees and butterflies). Ideal for borders, gravel gardens, coastal gardens, and small spaces. Looks great with ornamental grasses, sedums, and late-flowering perennials.
Deep violet-blue flowers, borne in clusters from August–September. Grey-green, aromatic leaves. Neat, rounded shrub, 60–90 cm tall and wide. Fully hardy in the UK (to about –15 °C).
Position at full sun (essential for best flowering). Well-drained soil. Tolerates poor or chalky soils. Drought-tolerant once established. Sheltered, sunny spot preferred.
Prune hard in early spring (March) to 20–30 cm from the base. Flowers form on new wood, so this is important. Light feed in spring if soil is very poor. Generally trouble-free pests and diseases.
