The European Fan Palm is an indoor and outdoor palm tree. It is widely used in rockery, hedges and pots. The fruit and the heart of the plant are edible. They have antidiarrhoea and astringent properties. Strings and baskets are made from the leaves for upholstery. The fibres are used in paper industry and textile industry.
The Chamaerops humilis is a dioecious with male and female flowers on separate plants. It can grow up to 1-6 m. The leaves are palmed, green with abundant spikes. Yellowish flowers. Fleshy and brown fruit at maturity. Not demanding for the soil. Cold hardy up to -10 ºC. Slow growing.
Dig a hole at least two or three times as wide and deep as the root ball. Take out the plant from the container and loosen roots to allow them to spread out in all direction. Cut possible broken roots. Mix the soil extracted with a substrate and fill part of the hole with the mixture obtained. Place the plant in the hole and cover with the remaining mixture. Compact the soil around the plant and water thoroughly.
