Perennial grass, native to South Asia, best known for its highly aromatic roots. This plant as mutiple uses such as Perfumes, cosmetics, aromatherapy, traditional medicine, erosion control, and soil/water conservation.
Its dense root system can grow several meters deep, making vetiver particularly valuable for stabilizing soil and reducing erosion.
Essential oil is extracted from the roots; earthy, woody, smoky and long-lasting aroma.
Cultivation: Full sun is best. Keep soil moist while establishing; mature plants tolerate periods of drought. Well-drained soil, although vetiver tolerates a wide range of soils. Prefers warm, tropical/subtropical conditions; protect from prolonged frost. Cut back old foliage periodically to encourage fresh growth. Roots are generally harvested after about 12–18 months, depending on the intended use.
