PLANTS OF COMMON HAZEL - CORYLUS AVELLANA

Common Hazel is found in meadows, along streams, paths and in woodlands. Hedges. The wood is used in marquetry work and cabinet making. Dowsers look for water with Hazel rods. The bark, fruit, leaves and seeds have nutritional, astringent properties. Hazelnuts are eaten raw, toasted or cooked. They are used in pastry and for oil making. The fruit is food for the wildlife.

Deciduous tree growing up to 4m with hairy and oval leaves. Small yellow and red flowers. The fruit is the hazelnut. Prefers light, fertile soils.

Dig a hole at least two or three times as wide and deep as the root ball. Take out the plant from the container and loosen roots to allow them to spread out in all direction. Cut possible broken roots. Mix the soil extracted with a substrate and fill part of the hole with the mixture obtained. Place the plant in the hole and cover with the remaining mixture. Compact the soil around the plant and water thoroughly.
