Popular ornamental garden plant.
Tall perennial flowering plant (typically 1–1.5 meters high). Large palmate leaves with 9–17 leaflets (“polyphyllus” = many-leaved). Dense flower spikes in red. Blooms in late spring to early summer.
Prefers moist, well-drained soil and full sun. It is naturally found in meadows, riverbanks, roadsides.
This specie is used to fix nitrogen (improves soil fertility) and is attractive to pollinators.
Contains alkaloids. Toxic to livestock if eaten in large quantities.
