Chives is an essential herb in cooking. It is also an ornamental plant for the garden, in pots, on the sill of a window or in the kitchen. It is an ingredient in stuffed eggs, salads and omelettes. Rich in vitamins A, B, C. The plant has antibacterial and fungicide properties. Chives is insect-repelling and can be used in gardens to control pests. 5,000 years ago it was used by the Chinese as an antidote against venoms or to stop haemorrhage.

Perennial 50 cm tall with long and tubular dark green leaves. Flowers are pink to purple and star-shaped.

In the garden it needs well-drained, light and fertile soils. The ideal climate for outside culture is temperate or cool.
