The Norway spruce is essentially used as Christmas tree and timber. Its wood is ideal in cabinet-making or paper production. Music instruments such as Stradivarius are made from its wood too. The buds, leaves and resins of this tree can be used to make essential oils, herbal tea or distilled water for their balsamic, antiseptic and antibiotic properties.
It is a large evergreen conifer growing to 35-55 m tall. Narrow and conical shape with grey bark. The shoots are orange-brown and glabrous. The leaves are needle-like and dark green on all four sides. The cones have bluntly to sharply triangular-pointed scale tips and hang from the branches. First they are green then turn reddish brown at maturity. The seeds are black.
Direct sowing in spring.
