Ornamental tree with numerous medicinal properties and edible fruitsThis tree is the symbol of the City of Madrid, Spain. This species is grown in gardens for the beauty of its foliage, its flowers and fruits.

Times ago herbal tea was made out from the leaves for its diuretic and antiseptic properties. It was also an ingredient in alcoholic beverages. The bark and leaves have anti-inflamatory and diuretic properties. The fruit is also used to make marmelade, preserves and jam.

Compact and round habit. The serrated leaves are bright green and similar to the Bay Laurel. The flowers are white. They produce an orange-yellow berry which turns red when ripe.

It prefers cool, deep soils and mild climates.
